Staff and trustees of Kesgrave War Memorial Community Centre (KWMCC) organised a small gathering on Monday 12th of November to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Armistice Day.

Regular hirers and members of The East Anglian Reserve were invited to the centre for the unveiling of a commemorative half tree bench with plaque, to remember those that lost their lives.

The bench commissioned by KWMCC and funded by District Councillor Stuart Lawson from the Enabling Communities budget, has been placed in the garden area around the oak tree for visitors to take time to sit and reflect, whilst children from the centres resident play group Humpty Dumpty, created a fabulous display of homemade poppies to go around the tree, made especially for the occasion.

District Councillor Stuart Lawson said:
“I am honoured to have funded this special bench, set in a lovely peaceful area of the garden where visitors can sit and take time to remember the sacrifices made by so many. Well done to all those involved in this commemorative initiative.”

Refreshments were provided, along with a brief welcome from the centre’s Chairman of the board of trustees Richard Baird, followed by a talk on the end of the war by the Kesgrave Royal British Legion’s, Don Whinney.

The unveiling of the bench was performed by The East Anglia Reserves in full uniform accompanied by ‘The Last Post’, played by local buglers Andy Gaffer and Neville Woolnough, followed by two minutes silence.
